Dear Editor,
Having worked alongside both Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham, I am satisfied, beyond a doubt, that neither of these patriots was racist, but were victims of both external and internal forces; this has left a permanent, and ugly ethnic scar on our country.
One noticeable feature among sections of the PPP leadership has been an irrational objection to any Indian Guyanese who is openly critical of their policies and actions. The PPP’s venom is particularly directed against those Indian Guyanese who are intelligent, courageous and articulate.
For our young people, we need to see the recent assault on the character of Mr Christopher Ram and family in this broader context, an attack which requires every decent and fair-minded citizen, to speak up against a creeping hegemonistic juggernauth in Guyana – Freddie Kissoon, Christopher Ram, who next?
Using its enormous media control, the government seems on the royal road to an elected dictatorship; we need recall that we are the only country in the free world where there is only one radio station controlled by the government. If the propaganda gurus, et al, can name a country in this hemisphere that only has one state-controlled radio station, I will publicly withdraw my statement and apologise.
I hope that Freddie Kissoon, Christopher Ram, Glen Lall of Kaieteur News, Anand Persaud of Stabroek News and others will not be intimidated and will continue to serve Guyana with courage and distinction and continue to be our true patriots and heroes.
Not easy, but for the sake of all our children – necessary.
Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green, JP
