In observance of World Olympic Day, the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) will stage its annual Olympic Day Run, Walk and Jog event on Sunday from 06:00 hours.
Additionally, trials for the CARICOM 10k race meet, which is scheduled for Jamaica on July 5, will also be held on Sunday.
According to President of the Amateur Athletics of Guyana (AAG) Colin Boyce the trials are open to the country’s best distance athletes.
Speaking about the Olympic Day Run, Walk and Jog event, Boyce said that the event was open to all affiliates of the GOA and AAG along with governmental and non-governmental organisations.
He pointed that persons with disabilities should also feel welcome to join the commemorative event, which is aimed at “attracting a wide cross-section of participants.”
On the other hand, organisations and affiliates alike with teams of six persons will have an opportunity to compete for the top prize of $50,000 while the second and third place teams will receive $35,000 and $25,000 respectively. The teams, which should comprise of four males and two females, must be uniformed and must come from one organisation.
Boyce said that the final day for registration of persons will be tomorrow at 16:00 hrs at the GOA Headquarters on High Street, Georgetown.
Participants for the individual events must not be below the age of 10 while members of the team event must be over the age of 16 as is stipulated under the guidelines of the International Amateur Athletic Federation.
Boyce stated that registration will be free and at the end of the event participants will receive an International Olympic Committee (IOC) certificate of participation and a jersey.
This year, the event is scheduled to begin at 06:00 hrs outside the YMCA Ground, Thomas Lands.
participants will then proceed to Camp Street and turn north onto Carifesta Avenue to follow the course on the Rupert Craig Highway just over three miles before reaching the halfway point at Turkeyen.
On their return, participants will head west down Rupert Craig Highway to Vlissengen Road where they will proceed south until they get to Thomas Road for the final straight before finishing where the event began.
