Squires, Sukra dish out `double bagel’ defeats

Number one seed Philip Squires lived up to his billing in his first appearance in the Guyana Bank For Trade and Industry lawn tennis tournament when he handed Gairy Myers a `double bagel’ defeat Tuesday night at the GBTI Sports Club courts, Bel Air Park.

Men’s doubles winners Jason Andrews and Jeremy Miller.

Squires defeated Myers 6-0 6-0 in a men’s singles encounter and he then teamed up with Godfrey Lowden to defeat Khalif Gobin and Benedict Sukra 6-1 6-1 in a men’s doubles encounter.

Squires will face Gavin Barckoy in a quarter-final match.

In another men’s singles encounter, Adam Alves’ winning streak was abruptly ended by Leyland Leacock who dominated the match in winning 6 – 1 6 – 1 win.

Meanwhile, in the last of the men’s match-ups of the night, Sandeep Chand was able to nick a win over Lowden in three sets winning 5 – 7, 6 – 2, 7 – 5.

Jeremy Miller and Jason Andrews ended the night’s proceedings with a 6-2 6-3 win over Andre Lopes and Chand.

In the ladies’ singles, Krystal Sukra in a wonderful show of talent followed in Squires’ footsteps, crushing Thi Fernandes 6-0 6-0 to earn herself a spot in the final where she will meet Carol Humphrey.

Sukra is scheduled to meet her doubles partner Nicola Ramdyhan in her next junior girls match.

In the junior boys’ singles, number two seed Daniel Lopes advanced to the final after defeating Saevion David Longe 6 – 2 6 – 1.
