-driver remains at large
Nearly three weeks after being hit by a speeding driver while waiting on a bus in front of her school, 15-year-old Lisa Mc Farlane remains a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital while the driver of the car remains at large.
Mc Farlane was moved from the High Dependency Unit to the Female Surgical Ward but her father says that she still cannot remember what occurred on that day. Mc Farlane sustained broken legs and a broken shoulder and had to undergo immediate surgery to remove her spleen which was punctured.
Mc Farlane had finished school for the day and was awaiting transportation in the corner of the road near the Belladrum Secondary School, West Berbice when motorcar PKK 4283 came speeding down the road, swerved and struck Mc Farlane.
The accident was witnessed by Mc Farlane’s friend who said other witnesses reported that the man appeared to have been sleeping at the wheel. After colliding with Mc Farlane, the friend said, the driver got out of the car shook the broken glass off his clothes got back into the vehicle and drove away.
Public-spirited citizens rushed to Mc Farlane’s aid. The driver meanwhile parked his car in front of a resident’s home in Lichfield, West Berbice telling the resident that he had hit a cow, Mc Farlane’s mother said she learnt.
The Lichfield resident called the police but by the time they arrived, the driver had made good his escape.
Yesterday in the hospital, the girl’s father said that the owner of the car had called asking for permission to see his daughter but he told the man no. The father says that he wants justice for his daughter not sympathy.
Mc Farlane is scheduled for another surgery on her injured shoulder.
Meanwhile, Commander of B Division Stephen Merai said that police were able to identify the owner of the car. The commander added that the matter is still under investigation but he is considering proceeding with charges against the woman who is the owner of the car.
According to the commander, the woman says she is not clear who the driver of the car was. The commander says he does not believe that she does not know who drove her car.
