Alleyne wins table tennis trials

National Under-21 player Joel Alleyne with three wins and one defeat, won the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) men’s trials Thursday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Alleyne and national junior player Nigel Bryan each ended with the same win/loss ratio but Alleyne was adjudged the winner after getting the better of Bryan in their head-to-head showdown.

Going into the final round of matches Edinho Lewis, Bryan, Alleyne and Paul Meusa each stood a chance on winning the trials.

Meusa, however, was upset by Alleyne 11-6, 7-11, 11-5, 9-11, 3-11 while Bryan got the better of Lewis 4-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-5.

Earlier in the first round, Alleyne got past Bryan 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9 and the victory turned out to be decisive.

Alleyne’s only defeat came at the racquet of Lewis who won 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4.

Meusa and Lewis each ended with two wins and two losses but Meusa took third position by virtue of his win over Lewis.

Meusa defeated Hewley Griffith 9-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-6, 11-7 and Lewis 6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-4 while Lewis defeated Alleyne and Griffith 11-2, 11-6, 11-1.

Griffith who lost all four of his matches placed fifth.

Final placings: Alleyne, Bryan, Meusa, Lewis and Griffith.

Three players Jonathan Sankar, Orin `Vege’  Hickerson and Andrew Daly failed to show up for the trials which is being used by the GTTA to arrive at the men’s team for this year’s Caribbean championships and the CAC Games both scheduled for Puerto Rico.

Another trial is billed for tomorrow at the same venue.
