The East Coast Demerara Flex Check (ECDFC) spinners’ intention was evident: to win handsomely and convincingly against Georgetown Flex Text team in the final preliminary round of the Demerara Zone of the Digicel Summer Smash 20/20 tournament at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground yesterday.
They did.
The strategy to bowl 17 overs of spin almost achieved its desired purpose as after 10 overs the Georgetown team had only scored 30 runs and had lost three wickets.
The Georgetown batsmen were further exposed by consistent and sensible spin bowling and were reeling at 39-5.
But opener and West Indies under-19 batsman Trevon Garraway changed the complexion of the game. His match- winning innings of 47 was well structured even as wickets fell cheaply around him.
Later in the innings, Ravi Sarwan and Troy Gonsalves played two audacious cameos of 17 not out and 13 respectively as their team reached 119-8 from 19.3 overs.
Spinners Imran Khan and Ryan Ramdass were the pick of the bowlers with returns of 2-19 (4) and 2-33 (2) respectively while Videsh Lall (1-17) and Zaheer Mohammed (1-31) picked up one wicket apiece.
Earlier, when the ECDFC batted national batsman Krishna Arjune top scored with 36 (3×6) and Ryan Ramdass stroked two sixes in 22.
National players Steven Jacobs and Christopher Barnwell picked up 2-24 and 1-27 respectively to restrict ECDFC to 118-5 from 20 overs.
In Georgetown’s reply Barnwell (1), Barrington (1), Leon Johnson (13), Derwin Christian (5) and Deon Ferrier (0) all fell cheaply before Griffith came to his team’s rescue.
