A new volleyball tournament designed to give a major fillip to the sport locally is set to commence shortly.
According to a press release, the True Champion Volleyball tournament, which will be launched next month, will be played at several venues around Guyana and is expected to run for three months.
The tournament will be sponsored by TradeWind Tankers and Guyoil.
Castrol Strikers Volleyball Club is the organising agent for the tournament which has the blessing of the Guyana Volleyball Association.
The True Champions Volleyball Tournament which has the aim of resuscitating and developing the sport, will be launched July 17 at 10am at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Participating teams are expected from Linden, Berbice, West Coast and Georgetown, among others.
The tournament has a unique format which will provide teams the opportunity to prove their all round strength and ability and will be contested at different venues to give teams’ exposure to different playing conditions as well as to promote the game in different locations.
Games will be played from 10am to 9pm on two weekends in each month from July to September. The first month of the competition will be an Open tournament as the organisers will invite as many teams as possible, including female teams.
The six top teams from the first month will advance to the second month and the third month will be the semi finals and finals.
The tournament begins at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and moves to Goed Fortuin for the second weekend on July 24. It will then go to Berbice on August 14 and 28 and back to the Sports Hall on September 11 and 18 for the third and final month, a release from the organizers stated.
The multi-format tournament will see games contested in the two’s, four’s and regular six-man format, but teams will need a minimum of seven players to participate.
Teams will be awarded in each month of the competition. In the first two months the first and second place winners will receive $20,000 and $10,000 respectively, while in the third month the overall champion will receive $80,000. Second and third place winners will receive $40,000 and $20,000 respectively.
