After bluster and bombast at the press conference on Tuesday, the boxers will now have to lend credence to their bravado tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in the fifth edition of the GBBC/GABA Pro-Am card.
In the lone female professional fight veteran Margaret ‘Chico’ Walcott already believes that former amateur champion Mandessa Moses is not her match.
Walcott, who has not laced up since December 13, 2008 against Iva Weston, reminded Moses and reporters at the press conference at the National Communication Network (NCN) of her epic battles with Guyana’s first female world champion Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil.
Therefore, Walcott warned that Moses, who has remained unbeaten on the FNF Pro-Am card, not to take her lightly. On the other hand it must be noted that Walcott has only won one professional bout of her 10 appearances in the ring with one draw.
Moses acknowledged that Walcott has more ring and fight experience but emphasized that she will emerge victorious on fight night. The former national boxer said that she has been training hard with the guidance of her coach Lennox Daniels and that will make the difference at the end of the night.
Moses also pointed out that she has always been active and Walcott has to bring her best game after the first bell tolls.
The main event has also been set up to be an exciting fight between heavyweight pugilists Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes and Anthony Augustin. ‘The Lion’ Gilkes has reiterated his position that he will not be making any predictions, especially since he has done so before and events had turned out badly. He has now taken the stance of “fighting and using his ring experience to beat his opponents.”
He also promised that he will be “brutal” in his return to the ring while the hard hitting Augustin has promised to teach Gilkes a lesson “for his mouth”. Augustin is yet to win a professional fight but he has one loss and a draw in his brief career.
Gilkes has an unflattering record of five wins from his 19 bouts, with a fifth win after seven successive defeats.
In the second professional fight Orlon ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers, who seems to be a boxer who fights to improve other boxers’ records and not his own, will be going up against Wilmot Hutson. Despite his promises to dispatch his opponents, Rogers has not won a fight since 2005 against Mark Fernandes.
Since that fight he has lost six straight fights in addition to two losses before the win. With this picture Hutson’s promise to “remove Rogers from the [boxing] scene” is apt. However, Rogers retorted by stating that he will “put Hutson’s lights out”. Whether this bravado will transfer to the ring will be ascertained this evening.
Rogers has won only three fights and lost nine times.
In the curtain raiser of the professional segment, former amateur champion Clive Atwell will challenge Mark Austin in a lightweight contest.
Meanwhile, in the amateur ranks Central American and Caribbean medal hopefuls Herlando Allicock, Dexter Jordan and Bert Braithwaite, who have all promised to succeed at the upcoming championships, will be challenging Danishwar Narine in the junior flyweight division, Rhyan Ally and George Anthony respectively. In the last fight of that segment Clevlon Rock, junior Commonwealth silver medalist, will reach Republican Gym’s Nankumar Singh in a rematch.
Bell time is 20:00 hours and the entrance fee is $500.
