A man was remanded to prison yesterday by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson when he appeared before her charged with indecent assault.
The man, 67, was not required to plead when the charge was read to him. It was alleged that between May 1 and May 31, he indecently assaulted a five-year-old girl.
The man and the complainant in the matter both reside at the same address.
On the day in question, the girl had returned home from school and it is alleged that the man removed her underwear and fondled her.
Later, when the child’ great grandmother returned home, she told her of what had transpired and a report was made to the police. The man was then arrested and charged with the offence.
The matter has been put down for July 2 for advice to be sought from DPP chambers.
