Ravi Ramlall, the businessman who was shot by a lone gunman early Thursday morning, said yesterday he was baffled about the motive of the attack.
Up to press time last evening, the shooter was still at-large and police had no leads.
Ramlall, who has been admitted as a patient at a city hospital, said the bullet cannot be removed at this point, since it is lodged very close to his lungs. The area where the bullet entered was heavily bandaged. He said he could not even cough, for fear that the bullet would be repositioned.
Questioned about the reason behind the incident, a distressed Ramlall said he was clueless, noting that he had just returned home with two friends. As he lay on his hospital bed, he recalled the attack, which took place outside his La Penitence home, where he also operates a night spot, the Middle Pocket Arena.
Ramlall was standing with his friends when a man with a piece of cloth concealing part of his face approached from a nearby dam and suddenly opened fire. Two rounds were discharged at him; the first hit him in the left shoulder while the second missed.
Ramlall told Stabroek News that despite his wound, he discharged two rounds from his licensed firearm at his attacker, who was running back towards the dam. He could not say if the gunman had been wounded.
He expressed concern that the police seemed not to be conducting a proper investigation. He recalled that a rank visited him on Thursday and he gave a five-page statement which he thought contained “trivial details” that were irrelevant to the investigation.
“All they were concerned about was getting information… why they didn’t go and look for the man? That is what they got to do,” the man said.
Police had said in a statement that around 3am Thursday, Ramlall was standing on the roadway outside his residence chatting with friends when a man approached, discharged “a round” that struck him in the left shoulder and escaped.
No one in the area recalled seeing the man. Persons said they were only alerted to the incident when the gunshots rang out.
