In an effort to develop and promote boxing in the interior regions, the Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, D. Frank Anthony, presented an assortment of boxing gear to the Port Kaituma Boxing Gym at a simple presentation ceremony held at the ministry’s office yesterday.
At the presentation along with the minister were president of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Steve Ninvalle and coordinator and coach of the Port Kaituma Boxing Gym, Shem Cuffy, who received the gear in the presence of members of the gym.
Dr. Anthony said that the ministry had observed that basic equipment for the development of the sport at the foundation level was hardly available to the youths of the Port Kaituma Gym.
However, even with limited equipment the young determined gym members have been performing well at recent amateur bouts. Noticing the potential in the youths, the ministry decided to contribute to the youths of the gym.
“We were impressed by what we saw… we noticed talent in the boxers and we now have to monitor and build on this,” Dr. Anthony said.
According to Dr Anthony, the ministry will be taking steps to “take boxing to a new level so that people in different regions will learn.”
Prior to accepting the gear, Cuffy thanked the ministry and the GABA for the emphasis that they are placing on boxing in the interior and assured that the boxers will strive to “achieve a lot” with the gear.
