The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) is giving itself a pat on the back after fast bowler Brandon Bess became the 14th Berbician to play Test Cricket on Saturday.
Bess made his Test debut for the West Indies against South Africa on Saturday in the third and final test of the Digicel 2010 series at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
And, according to a press release from the BCB, Bess received heartfelt congratulations from the President and Executive Committee of the BCB.
”The executives of the board strongly believed this existing development is just rewards for the unbelievable strides Berbice Cricket has undergone over the last three years with over one hundred programmes completed and cricket being played at all levels as never before,” the release stated.
Bess is only the second fast bowler from Berbice to play test cricket after the legendary John Trim who played four test matches from 1948- 1952. The BCB release also pointed out that this was the first time since 1979 that two Berbicians had played together on the West Indies team in a test match.
The BCB is also buoyant over the fact that over the last 18 months four players Sewnarine Chattergoon, Narsingh Deonarine and Bess, in Tests and Royston Crandon in a One Day International, have represented the West Indies senior team at the International level.
It also noted that the only two Guyanese to play in the 2010 Women’s World Cup Competition, Shemaine Campbell and Tremayne Smartt were from Berbice.
“The BCB commits to continuing this trend as in the near future many more historic programmes and projects would be unveiled,” the release stated.
The BCB said it was working to ensure that every promising talent in the county was allowed to blossom.
The BCB said it is also confident that with the programmes in place, it is only a matter of time before players like Assad Fudadin, Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul join Bess on the West Indies senior team.
The board congratulated Blairmont Community Development Centre Cricket Club coach Adrian Amsterdam and the family and friends of Brandon Bess and said it would always support Bess in his career once he remains committed and disciplined.
