A 20-year-old man was remanded to prison yesterday after he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Court charged with having carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 15.
It is alleged that Thakur ‘Niggie’ Saroopchan of Vryheid, West Canje, Berbice committed the offence at his home during the month of May last.
Reports are that Saroopchan’s mother had invited the child to her home to make some fudge. The woman subsequently was called away and had asked the girl to stay until the fudge was completed.
The girl was left alone with the defendant who reportedly invited her into his room to watch a DVD. He subsequently had carnal knowledge of her while issuing threats.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police and the man was arrested and charged.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Satrohan Dayaram opposed bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.
He said hat if bail is granted it is likely that the defendant would tamper with the witnesses.
The magistrate refused bail and the matter is expected to be called again on July 19.
