The out-of-towners highlighted day two of the National Schools Basketball Festival (NSBF) when they went head-to-head on Monday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in a match-up that saw Kwakwani Secondary outshining New Silver City 29-27.
The teams from two of the country’s top basketball communities took their game right down to the wire, at which point Kwakwani’s main man, Dominique Douglas expanded on an already decent performance to deliver the knockout blows to Silver City on his way to a game high 15 points.
Douglas came one rebound short of a double-double with his nine boards, most of which were in the latter half to give his team some much needed possession after they found themselves trailing by eight points early in the second half.
With Douglas racking up the boards which were converted into some vital mid-range jumpers from him and his squad, Kwakwani managed to erase the deficit and leveled the game on 23 points with five minutes remaining.
The teams approached the final minute trading baskets with the scores 26-27 at Silver City’s advantage, but the mere one point lead was not enough to hold off the ever attacking Kwakwani team.
It was not long after that Douglas struck again and sealed Silver City’s fate when he hit nothing but net after releasing the eventual game winning shot from beyond the arc.
Marlon Pollydore spearheaded New Silver City’s scoring with 12 points.
The feature battle between the School of the Nations and Linden Foundation saw Linden Foundation winning 32-24.
Linden Technical Institute (LTI) got the better of the Government Technical Institute (GTI) immediately prior to the feature game with a 25-16 win.
Orin Rose top scored for the Linden side with 10 points, six of which came in the form of three pointers from way outside the arc.
In other games played yesterday afternoon heading into the evening Marian Academy defeated West Demerara Secondary 22-12 in their under-16 contest and President’s College redeemed themselves from an opening day loss on Monday to trounce Trust College 31-25.
Marian Academy’s under-18 squad rolled over the East Bank Combined team 42-11.
In the high scoring match-up between Charlestown and Berbice, Charlestown’s Sheldon Noel racked up the majority of his team’s points as he totaled 24 to push his team to a 42-29 points win.
Meanwhile, St. Rose’s and Bishops’ recorded the lowest scoring game of the tournament thus far when Rose’s edged their opponents 13-12. This was immediately followed by Saint Stanislaus thrashing of Queen’s College in their open game which ended 24-12.
