Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee again met with Tuschen residents to address security concerns and other issues affecting them at an outreach activity hosted on Tuesday.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Rohee’s meeting follows closely on an earlier visit to provide assistance to the Region Three community. Residents voiced concerns about the large number of stray animals roaming public roads, noise nuisance and robbery around the market area. In response, Rohee advised them to report noise nuisances to the nearest police station or the Environmental Protection Agency so that action can be taken against perpetrators.
As regard strays he suggested some residents volunteer to sign up for the stray catchers job and take the animals to the nearest pound. In addition, he said residents have to assume responsibility for their animals and keep them off roadways. The minister also noted that before the passage of the Pound Bill pounds were rehabilitated in many areas.
According to GINA, Rohee had been told that residents’ pasture lands had been repossessed for house lot allocations and that drainage and irrigation was also an issue. Several residents also complained that they had applied for firearm licences since 2002 but were yet to receive a reply.
Additionally, Region Three Chairman Julius Faerber advised residents to seek assistance from the Agriculture and Housing and Water ministries to deal with the related issues as the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) has no authority to deal with them. However, he said the NDC will visit the area affected by drainage and irrigation problems to bring some form of relief. Faerber also said that the NDC will address the security matter, which includes petty theft in the area.
Rohee noted that the Community Policing Groups (CPGs) should work cohesively with members of the Guyana Police Force to secure the lives of residents in and around the area as this will reduce the amount of petty thefts that occur. He reminded the residents that the government is committed to ensuring the safety of citizens and it has provided land and water transportation to the CPGs to equip them to respond to calls from citizens.
