Thirteen primary schools will be participating in a Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) 2010 Inter-school Mini-Tennis Competition which will be held this Sunday at the National Gymnasium from 09.00 hrs.
The thirteen schools slated to take part are Marian Academy, St. Pius, St. Ambrose, St. Angela’s, Ketley Primary, East La Penitence Primary, Tucville Primary, Enterprise Primary, Mae’s Under-12, West Ruimveldt Primary, F. E. Pollard Primary, J. E. Burnham Primary, and New Guyana School.
Last December, St. Angela’s Primary won the Best School Award, being the school which had best incorporated the game into their Physical Education programme, in addition to participating in the competition.
The children who excel at this competition are earmarked for further development in the sport and are usually encouraged to join the national squad to take their game to an advanced level.
The day’s activities will feature a round-robin competition with prizes lined up for Best School, Best Teacher, Under-8 & Under-10 Boys Winner & Runner-up, and Under-8 and Under-10 Girls Winner & Runner-up.
Coordinator of the Schools Tennis Initiative Programme and National Junior Coach, Shelly Daly-Ramdhyan expects to see great competition amongst the young players.
Earlier this year, the mini-tennis programme which introduces basic tennis skills was extended to primary schools in New Amsterdam and Corriverton and teachers were exposed to playing, competing and scoring.
Competitions in these areas are scheduled to take place during the school August break.
