A relief fund for the Mahdia fire victims has been established by the Guyana Gold Miners Association (GGDMA) and so far $10M has been raised.
In a press release yesterday, the GGDMA explained that the fund was established to assist miners and members of the mining community, following the devastating fire which ravaged the community on Thursday night.
As many as 150 persons have been left homeless and the damage to property is still being accessed. Mahdia is the central hub for mining activities in Region Eight.
Executive Director of GGDMA Edward Shields is quoted as saying members had expressed deep concern upon hearing of the tragedy. “We are pledging our support for miners and members of the community in their rebuilding efforts,” Shields added.
Executive members of the Association are expected to visit the community today to assess the damage done and while there they will meet with the Mahdia Mining Committee to determine the urgent needs within the community and other areas of support.
The priority for the Association, the release added, is to ensure that the displaced residents find shelter and start the rebuilding process.
So far, donations have been received from Stanislaus Jardin, Afro Alphonso, Chunilall Baboolall (CDR Mining), Mahendra Persaud (Crown Mining), Yucatan Reis (Excel Mineral) Patrick Perreira and Shawn Hopkinson. At the time of the press release, the fund had $10M along with a pledge of over one million dollars in timber.
