What is expected to be quite simply the biggest Veterans table tennis tournament to be staged here in recent times gets underway this morning at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The tournament is being fully sponsored by Commissioner of Police Henry Greene and is expected to attract the cream of the country’s Veteran table tennis players.
The tournament commences at 10am and will be contested in three categories; over 35 years, over 40 years and over 50 years.
Players will compete for trophies and cash incentives, and no entrance fee is required to enter the competition.
However, according to the organizers of the tournament persons who have represented the country within the past three years have been debarred from entering the competition.
Among some of the top players who will be on show from Georgetown are Patrick Triumph, Xenophen Goliath, Merton Blake, Remy Taitt, Michael Vieira, Leon Yaw and Bruce Murray.
From Ogle will come Sammy Boodhoo, Ashraf Alli and former Caribbean junior champion Ronald Balkissoon.
New Amsterdam will be led by former Berbice top player Floyd Conway and Richard Thompson.
Most of the players have been training quite hard
over the past few weeks and as such fireworks can be expected.
The registration of players for the tournament will commence at 0900 hrs today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and players are requested to be in possession of some form of identification, such as national identification card or passport.
