NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pennsylvania, (Reuters) – Tiger Woods completed a frustrating week with a pedestrian one-over-par 71 in the final round at the AT&T National yesterday.
Woods mostly drove the ball well but his iron play was disappointing and his putting mediocre on the slick Aronimink greens.
“I was great with the driver,” last year’s champion told reporters after finishing among the also-rans at four-over 284.
It is the first time in a non-major PGA Tour event that Woods has failed to break par in all four rounds since the 1999 Bay Hill Invitational.
“I felt like I was driving it on a string all week.
Unfortunately, my iron game wasn’t as sharp as it could be and certainly I putted awful.
“Welcome to golf. There are weeks when you hit it absolutely atrociously and for some reason shoot under par every day. Or you hit it on a string and feel like you can’t make anything.
“I just had one of those week unfortunately. Hopefully we’ll get it dialled in for the British.”
The American world number one was referring to next week’s British Open at St Andrews, where he won in 2000 and 2005.
Woods, who returned to golf in April after a five-month break following revelations about his extra-marital affairs, said he would probably have four practice rounds on the Old Course before this year’s event.
In the meantime, he was flying overnight to Ireland for a celebrity pro-am and would then return home to Florida for a few days before crossing the Atlantic again to go to St Andrews.
