-eight homeless
A fire of unknown origin yesterday afternoon completely gutted a house and severely damaged another as eight persons were left homeless at 135 Waterloo Street in what is known as ‘Globe Yard’.
The gutted house was occupied by Tandy Liverpool, her mother, fiancé and two children. Liverpool said that she left home around 1:30 pm and shortly after she received a telephone call informing her that her home was on fire.
She rushed back but by then it was too late to save anything. In tears, she said, “I don’t know what to do.” She had lived at the location all her life.
Further, she said she had no idea what had caused the fire since according to her all of her electrical appliances were off when she left the house.
No one was at home at the time but a neighbour was the first to see the smoke coming from the kitchen area of her house. She said that the fire service tried their best to contain the flames but it was too late since her house was already engulfed.
A distraught Liverpool declared that “nothing ain’t left at all.” She estimated that her losses amounted to millions which included electrical appliances and money.
She added that she and her fiancé are miners and would usually keep their money at home, all of which went up in flames. She said all she is left with are the clothes on her back and some change in her bag.
Meanwhile, technicians from the Guyana Power and Light removed a number of wires from illegal connections in the yard. Liverpool acknowledged that there were illegal connections in the yard but she noted that could not have been the origin of the fire since she had a legal connection.
The occupant of the other house, Hermie Liverpool said she was at a salon when she saw the smoke and made her way home. Her house which was badly damaged was recently repaired. Three persons live with her.
The fire service responded promptly and worked feverishly to stop the flames from spreading to the nearby buildings.
