A mid afternoon fire yesterday left a South Sophia woman counting her losses and the owner believes the blaze was deliberately set.
Reports are that shortly after 1:45 yesterday afternoon neighbours observed smoke emanating from the Lot 584, Section A, South Sophia house and less than 10 minutes later the one–bedroom home of Chewholedin Hinds was reduced to ashes. Members of the Guyana Fire Service arrived at the scene shortly after but by then it was too late.
Hinds told this newspaper that she left the house secured, as always, after she left for work at the Federal Management Systems service in Queenstown as a security supervisor. She said that she heard of the fire while at work and according to her, the blaze may have been deliberately set since the house does not receive electricity.
Hinds lives close to her mother and according to her, she never had any grievances with anyone in the area.
The distraught woman said that she would be seeking shelter from her relatives while she contemplates rebuilding her home over the next few months.
