BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Jason Hinds, the younger brother of national captain Ryan Hinds, is one of three new players named in a Barbados 14-member squad for the Caribbean Twenty20 Championship, which begins on July 22 here.
Hinds, Larry Babb, and Ashley Nurse impressed during national T20 trial matches, and they are the three new faces in the squad, which the Barbados Cricket Association announced late yesterday.
The 25-year-old Hinds is an off-spin bowler, who has also opened the batting, or batted in the middle order for Empire, the same club for which his more recognised brother also plays.
He has put together a string of notable performances in the national T20 competition over the last two years, which has helped Empire to reach the Final in consecutive years.
Babb is a tall right-handed batsman, and left-arm fast-medium bowler, with a good reputation as a fielder.
The 27-year-old has also played league cricket in England, and three years ago, joined the Royal Barbados Police Force for whom he plays in the national club competition.
Nurse is a former national Under-19 off-spinner, and has been one of the most economical bowlers in the national T20 competition.
The 21-year-old plays for LIME, where he has been moved up and down the batting order with good effect, and also a sound fielder.
The squad also includes five players who have represented West Indies. They include lanky left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn, fast bowler Kemar Roach, opening batsman Dale Richards, all-rounder Dwayne Smith, and the elder Hinds.
Kirk Edwards and Kevin Stoute, two players currently on tour of England with West Indies-A, are also in the squad.
The squad is completed by players that have all appeared for the island in one form of the game or the other. They are left-hand batsman Jonathan Carter, fellow batsman Alcindo Holder, wicketkeeper/batsman Carlo Morris, and all-rounder Javon Searles.
Noticeably, none of the players at the West Indies High Performance Centre have been included in the list.
Neither has Pedro Collins, nor Tino Best been included, since they are currently pursuing professional playing contracts in the English County Championship.
Barbados open the CT20 in two night matches on home soil at Kensington Oval against Combined Campuses & Colleges on July 23 and Windward Islands on July 25.
They then face Guyana in their final prelimianry match in a day/night contest in Trinidad at Queen’s Park Oval on July 29.
