The Alliance For Change (AFC) has joined with the Guyana Police Force in mourning the loss of four of its ranks within the last week and called for adequate compensation for their families.

In a press release the AFC said while the deaths came, allegedly, as a result of accident, murder and an apparent suicide, the death of a police officer in any circumstance is a national loss.

It said too the Force and the nation can ill afford to lose its young ranks and officers through death in unnatural circumstances.

“We are not unmindful of the fact that even though ranks…are often condemned for committing atrocities against members of the public, they themselves are drawn from the very society that is often against them and are therefore deserving of our praise, condemnation, and at times like these, our sympathy,” the release said.

The party called on the administration to give more attention to the welfare of serving and retired ranks of the disciplined forces in order to ensure that they are properly honoured not only in life, but also in death. It said too in instances where the demise is in tragic circumstances and during the course of duty, relatives must be sufficiently compensated under a transparent and rules-based system that considers the rank’s years of service, family size and the circumstances of the death.

The AFC extends condolences to the bereaved families and to the members of the Force.
