Dear Editor,
I am surprised that no one has written about this before.
In this letter I hope to bring to the attention of those in authority a situation on the East Coast that is bringing untold misery to hundreds maybe thousands of Guyanese on a daily basis. No, this letter is not about water, electricity or flooding.
This letter concerns the two bridges that are presently “under construction”. Both of these bridges are located in the vicinity of Annandale, the other a few yards going East in the direction of Buxton.
Never have I experienced such planned madness!
Construction of the first bridge at the Annandale end was started many weeks ago. There is a narrow gap that allows only one vehicle at a time to traverse the construction site, so oncoming traffic at both ends has to rely on signals which, during the day are controlled by the police traffic department,
This first bridge was not completed and to my horror I saw the other bridge (Buxton end) being demolished! So presently we have two uncompleted bridges on one of Guyana’s main thoroughfares!
When I enquired why the first bridge was not completed before work was started on the other, no answer was forthcoming. In the last few weeks I hardly saw an active construction being undertaken. I was told that the contractor “had to move his men to the East Bank!”
So presently we have two unfinished bridges on a main highway and now I am told that work is soon to be started at the narrow bridge at Vigilance.
What I am more concerned about is the great hardships that again are being placed on thousands of Guyanese on a daily basis. For example a friend of mine told me the waiting time for a minibus has gone up by two hours!
A minibus driver also mentioned that nurses, teachers and workers are all reporting late for work and were told by their employers, “leave home one hour early!”
I hope this letter reaches the person who is responsible for such madness.
