Guyana’s top female football referee Dianne Ferreira-James has been appointed to officiate in the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany starting next week.
Ferreira-James who is currently based in the Bahamas left for Germany earlier this week for the tournament which kicks off on Tuesday and ends August 1.
Ferreira-James is the only referee from the Caribbean appointed to officiate in the finals which feature 16 nations.
The sixteen teams are: – hosts Germany, Costa Rica, Colombia, France, Brazil, Korea DPR, Sweden, New Zealand, England, Mexico, Japan, Nigeria, USA, Ghana, Switzerland and Korea Republic will compete in the tournament.
Ferreira-James, who became an international referee in 1999, has officiated in several major international women’s tournament including the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and FIFA Under-20 World cup finals in 2002 in Canada.
The tournament will kick off with Germany taking on Costa Rica in a Group A fixture in Bochum.
