A 44-year-old carpenter accused of breaking into the Amerindian Hostel and stealing a quantity of items valued $73,300 was on Tuesday placed on bail in the sum of $70,000 when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The allegation is that on July 10 Francis Steele of 16 Drysdale Street, Georgetown, broke and entered the Amerindian Hostel and stole 25 pairs of short pants valued $62,500 and 14 bottles of cooking oil valued $10,800, property of the Ministry of Education.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when it was read to him by Robertson.
When given a chance to respond the accused told the court that he is a hard working individual and has no need to steal anything from anyone.
“I’m a hard working man meh worship, and I don’t have need to thief nothing from nobody. I don’t trouble a soul, neither I don’t trouble noting fuh nobody.”
The police prosecutor told the court that on the day in question; the defendant broke into the hostel and stole the items. She added that none of the items was recovered.
Steele was later admitted to $70,000 bail and was ordered to return to Court Two on September 8 for statements.
As he was being escorted through the chute, the accused told the magistrate that he would have to spend the time in prison since he did not have the money to pay the bail.
