(Trinidad Express) – Dennis Pantin, economist, commentator, and University of the West Indies professor, has died.
Pantin, 61, died on Tuesday morning of complications related to cancer.
He died, family members said, at 7.40 am, at his Maracas Valley, St Joseph home, with his wife, Yolande, and children, at his side.
His career spanned 30 years at UWI, during which time he lectured in economics, carried out research work, served as head of the economics department, and coordinator of the Sustainable Economic Development Unit.
Younger brother of former Express editor Raoul Pantin, he once himself worked as a radio journalist, as a reporter for the TAPIA newspaper, and as a newspaper columnist.
Between 2002 and 2008, Pantin was chairman of the Regulated Industries Commission.
In political activities, Pantin was a member of the Tapia House Movement, under which banner he contested the 1976 general election for Diego Martin East.
More recently, he was a founder and chairperson of the Constitution Reform Commission.
UWI yesterday described Prof Pantin as a prolific writer, who maintained columns in newspapers for more than two decades.
Raoul Pantin, speaking of his brother, told the Express: “It was very hard for us in the family to watch this young, vigorous, man just waste away.”
