The body that was pulled from the canal between Vlissengen and Irving streets, close to Church Street on Thursday morning, remains unidentified.
The body of the man, believed to be in his mid-fifties, is lying at the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour. No one turned up yesterday to inquire about the remains. The body at the time of discovery was clad in cream-coloured chequered pants with a black belt and a pair of boots. According to reports, there are no marks of violence on the body.
The discovery was made by two lads, Troy Cush and Sherwin Roberts, who had said that they were on their way home when a ball they were playing with ended up in the canal. According to Cush, 13, he went to retrieve the ball and while in the canal he spotted what he thought was a salt bag and he pelted it with a brick.
Roberts, 12, added that he soon realised that it was a body when he saw what appeared to be arms. Cush told this newspaper that he then dived into the water and confirmed that it was indeed a man.
Subsequently, the boys reported their discovery to the guard at nearby premises and the police were summoned to the scene.
