Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday ordered that a 16-year-old boy be remanded to prison when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of snatching a woman’s gold chain.
The teen entered a guilty plea to the charge of larceny from the person which alleges that on July 14, he stole a gold chain valued $120,000 from Shontell Dowlatram.
The teen, who was unrepresented in court, is expected to make another court appearance on September 7.
The teen admitted that on the day of the incident he had followed Dowlatram as she was walking along Charlotte Street, and after a while snatched the chain she had around her neck.
He said that as he was making his escape several public-spirited citizens heard Dowlatram’s alarm and apprehended him.
He also told the court that his family is currently residing in Barbados and he did not have anyone here to turn to when the need arose.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford noted that the chain was found in the teen’s pants’ pocket.
