Twenty-two-year-old Leonard Nelson of Tucville was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of threatening to chop up his mother and sister.
Nelson pleaded not guilty to the charges of threatening language, threatening behaviour, assault and malicious damage to property which Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read to him.
He denied that on July 15, at his Tucville home, he used threatening language towards his mother Abiola Nelson and unlawfully and maliciously damaged two louvre panes valued at $500 belonging to her.
He also denied that on the same day and place he made use of threatening behaviour to his sister Onja Adams and unlawfully assaulted her.
The defendant declined to say anything about the matters and was ordered to make another court appearance in Court Two on September 22.
Abiola Nelson, who was also present in court, informed the magistrate that her son had been charged with burning down a part of the Georgetown Public Hospital almost two years ago.
Nelson stated that her son suffers from a mental illness which would have him acting normal at one time and out of control at other times.
She said that this may have been the case on the day of the incident since her son chased her and her daughter with a cutlass out of their home. She said he then locked them out of the house and when they attempted to get back in he dealt his sister a blow to her left hand which resulted in one of her fingers being broken.
She said her son had been given his medication regularly as ordered by the doctor.
She stated that he had also been charged with possession of marijuana but that case was dismissed.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunte told the court that the arson matter against Nelson had been put down so that the prosecution could gather all the necessary information together to conduct a single Preliminary Inquiry into the matter as advised by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
