I refer to the letter ‘Cameron & Shepherd is now joining Mr. Rockliffe in his public campaign over the calamitous state of the Land Registry.’ (S.N. July 18, 2010). I recall a similar complaint not so long ago made by the Berbice Law Association.

I have also suffered at the hands of the Registrar of the Lands Registry. It is not only the unduly long time that my matter took to be processed, but the utter disregard that the Registrar shows to both attorneys-at-law and clients. Counsel and I were frustrated and exasperated, to say the least. The queries raised by her were frivolous and vexatious. Just one example; can you believe that she actually requested that I submit an affidavit attesting to the death of my mother-in-law, although she had a copy of the death certificate? This affidavit was submitted on 10th July, 2010. But lo and behold! When I uplifted my ‘Certificate of Title to Land’ on the 16th July, 2010, I saw that she had certified it since 31st May, 2010.

I sincerely believe that the post of Registrar of the Lands Registry should be held by a suitably qualified individual – attorney-at-law. But, then again, as she boasted to me, she is answerable only to the Office of the President.
