A cyclist last evening lost his life after colliding with a motorcar on the public road at Woodley Park, West Coast Berbice and residents are furious that the police did not administer a breathalyzer test to the driver of the car involved in the accident.
At around 21:20 hrs Carl (only name given), who residents said was also called ‘Beco’ was riding home when he was struck by a grey Toyota AT 212 Carina, PLL 7837. According to reports reaching Stabroek News, Carl was in his early twenties and lived one village away from the accident at Number 12 Village.
Residents reportedly heard a loud impact and ran to the scene where they saw Carl’s body lying some eight feet from the point of impact. He succumbed to his injuries some minutes after.
At the time of the impact Carl was shirtless and the front wheel of his bicycle was said to have been badly damaged. Some 30 feet from his body were the slippers he was wearing.
The police, according to residents, arrived at the scene some 20 minutes after the accident but did not administer the breathalyzer test to the driver even though the occupants of the car smelled of alcohol.
The car had five passengers along with the driver. Reports are that the car and its occupants, reportedly from Linden, were heading to New Amsterdam.
Meanwhile, the driver is claiming that the cyclist turned suddenly in front of him and he could not have avoided the collision. One of the passengers of the car had to be rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital and was later transferred to the Mahaicony Hospital for treatment and an x-ray, reports said.
