Dear Editor
Please oblige publication of a matter that is of grave concern to a particular group of residents of Section A, Block X, Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
On the western side of the first street of Section A, Block X, Great Diamond, a large building is under construction. I understand it is part of Guyana’s development thrust. No one should quarrel with any instance of national development.
However, when it comes at a price that is adversely affecting a significant section of the residents of a community, then attention must be given to those concerns.
Large trucks are engaged to transport necessary building materials for this project. With the current rainy season it is not difficult to imagine the state of destruction of First Avenue, Block X, Great Diamond. In fact, taxis are no longer ferrying residents and other passengers to homes in this street.
Further, it was observed that the large trucks transporting building materials are no longer using First Avenue due to its almost impassable state, but are using Second Avenue. Some sections of that road have since been destroyed.
At one particular section a large crater spans the entire width of the road. Pedestrians are forced to skirt this crater by using a muddy path on one of the parapets.
Taxis are hinting at not ferrying passengers in this street also.
Road shoulders and parapets are destroyed with no apparent concerns by those involved in the destruction.
With all of this said, I am perplexed at the seeming callousness of the persons concerned with this destruction. Surely it would be in everyone’s interest and benefit, for the trucks to fill these craters with suitable road-building material. I am sure the Neighbourhood Development Council will scoff at the idea that they have to fix these roads.
I extend an invitation, on a rainy day, to all connected with this project and the attendant inconveniences to see the plight of the residents.
Is it too much to ask that we be allowed some measure of satisfaction befitting our investments in providing ourselves with homes in this community?
Photos are attached.
Yours faithfully,
