Night Crescendo of the Marcel Crawford Stable overcame the elements and created a major upset in the feature `C’ Class event on Sunday at the Norman Singh Turf Club, No. 6 Village, West Coast Berbice.
After beating out pre-race favourites Delmur Gold and Sweet Caramel, Night Crescendo, mounted by champion jockey for the past two race meets Yap Drepaul, took away $400,000 and the Banks DIH trophy.
In soggy conditions and aided by a last ditch effort, Night Crescendo beat Elcock Stable’s Delmur Gold by half a length while Sweet Caramel came in third.
Zelona, ridden by Mark Vassey, of the Shariff stable won its first race in the main supporting race for the three-year-old horses bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies. The Norman Singh stable pocketed the $250,000 first prize and the Chico Singh Trophy.
Laura Lee in Flight of the Customs racing stable had her own way in the wet conditions to win the F class event, $160,000 and a trophy, compliments of Dr. Phillip Da Silva, ahead of The Gap and Night Crescendo.
Nordan, which is creating waves on the race turf of The Cortland stable, was first in the two-year-old event for horses born and bred in Guyana, winning $1,500,000 and a trophy from A. Ally and Sons. Kevin, Nigerty and Speed Vision rounded out the other top positions.
Drepaul also guided Prospector’s Pride of the Jumbo Jet Stable to a win in the H and lower event to cart off the winning purse of $140,000 ahead of Casino Royal and Vanessa.
Funny Sided trudged through the mud to take the pole position, $120,000 and trophy ahead of the De Gump, Infinity, and Little Spike in the I Class event. The Guyana Telephone & Telegraph (GT&T) sponsored I-3 contest for winners of one race and lower was won by De Gump.
Infinity came in ahead of Monilisa and Spread the News in a race that had the winner taking $120,000 and a trophy.
Drepaul and apprentice jockey Vassey were the outstanding jockeys on show and they received trophies compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market.
Over three million dollars in cash, along with trophies, was on offer for the 55 horses that entered the gates for the day.
The event was held in collaboration with the Anglican Diocese of Guyana, which took the opportunity to express its gratitude to all who played a part in making the event a success.
