Dear Editor,
Permit me to respond to a letter in the July 6, 2O10, edition of the Kaieteur News and written by Leon Jameson Suseran captioned ‘When will the GPOC modernize its service in NA?’ In his letter Mr. Suseran said that he “turned up at the New Amsterdam centre to send off some DVD at just about 11:55 am on Thursday (01-07-10), only to be told that the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) officers (customs) had left since 11:30.”
He further went on to question the limited presence of officers at that location, whilst questioning the need for permanency at that location.
It should be noted that the Post Office in New Amsterdam is not the only one being served by the customs officers in Berbice and as such there is a system in place that facilitates the scheduled processing at various branches.
It is therefore not feasible or practical for the agency to have staff permanently based at every location.
Persons are usually informed by the Post Office Corporation of the days and times that GRA is available for service to the public as well as the relevant documents to be taken when conducting business.
The established days and times for the presence of Customs Officers at the New Amsterdam Post Office are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 am to 11:30 am and customers are urged to conduct their business during the time stipulated.
Yours faithfully,
