Adrian Spellen added a taekwondo silver medal to Guyana’s tally in the men’s under-87kg weight class at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games currently underway in Puerto Rico yesterday.
Spellen was beaten 7-2 in the gold medal match by Dominica’s Alcantara Richard at the Coliseum of Buga Abreu, Isabela. En route to Spellen’s silver medal performance he had to overcome the challenge of Kenneth Edwards of Jamaica 10-5.
In other taekwondo results Sven Lorrimer lost to eventual silver medallist Fredrico Rosal of Guatemala in the quarter-final 10-4 in the men’s under-63kg match; Dominica’s Rijo Jairo won the gold in that category after he beat Rosal 1-0.
On the track Marian Burnett returned a bronze medal in the women’s 800m final behind Colombia’s Rosibel Garcia, who doubled up with another gold medal in the 1500m, and Panama’s Andrea Ferris. Burnett ran 2:04.45 for her bronze and finished in the fourth position in the 1500m with a time of 4:22.56.
Garcia won the women’s 800m in 2:03.77 while she copped the mile in 4:21.17; Ferris, for her silver medal in the 800m ran 2:04.16 and finished in fifth place in the 1500m with a time of 4:25.21.
Following yesterday’s events Guyana medals tally is at 8.
Meanwhile, over at Luis F. Sambolín Gymnasium the table tennis players had mixed fortunes yesterday. Idi Lewis triumphed four sets to two over Guatemala’s Omar Flores; the games went 11-8, 12-10, 7-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-8 in the men’s singles first round. However, in the second round he tasted defeat in straight sets to Venezuela’s Jonathan Pino, who took the match 11-7, 13-11, 11-9, 11-8.
Overseas-based Michelle John sank 11-5, 11-9, 11-7, 11-3 to Natalia Bedoya of Colombia in her women’s singles first round match.
