Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee has assured AMCAR that he will address the pirate attacks jeopardising workers lives’ and affecting its business.
During a meeting with executives of AMCAR and Dubulay Ranch, Rohee assured he would look into the attacks, the Government Information Agency (GINA) has reported.
Last month, the company said AMCAR (Amazon Caribbean) Guyana Limited may be forced to close because of the recent attacks on its boats and factories and the failure of police to do anything about the situation. The company said its factory and workers who travel on the Berbice and Canje rivers are frequently attacked by masked gunmen. AMCAR Managing Director Christophe Sureau told GINA that the attacks have resulted in a 30% decrease in production as the labourers have refused to work in the rivers.
AMCAR, in partnership with the government and UNDP, has created jobs for residents of rural indigenous Amerindian communities, through the production and marketing of organic heart of palm and pineapple.
