The woman, of Bennett Dam, Rosignol, West Berbice, was initially charged with the capital offence two years ago but was committed on the lesser charge at the completion of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) and granted bail in the sum of $200,000 by Magistrate Nigel Hawke.

She was represented by attorney Deena Panday. Four witnesses gave evidence at the PI, which was delayed due to transfer of Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop.

The case commenced on September 24, 2008 and concluded on Thursday. However no case of the murder was made out against Thakurmani and the magistrate committed her to stand trial at the next sitting of the Berbice assizes on the charge of manslaughter.

The matter was prosecuted by Sergeant Donna Grant-Fraser. Reports are that the couple had a misunderstanding and Thakurmani dealt him a blow to his left hand at their home on 27 April, 2008. The man’s lifeless body was found under the house.

The woman, who had borne him seven children and who said she suffered years of abuse at his hands, had claimed that she was asleep and when she got up she discovered his lifeless body and raised an alarm. A post-mortem examination performed on Yodha, a fish vendor, showed that he died from shock and internal haemorrhage.
