On Wednesday the Toronto Premier of the Guyana Fashion Weekend (GFW) was launched at the art infused Trane Studio.
This historic event, a GFW release said, featured the Caribbean flavours of Mariska Designs, Marica De Santos, Nitisha Johns, Carol Fraser, David Clarke, Michael Kellman, Alana Bining & Michael De Abreu and is a prelude to the Caribana festival in Toronto.
GFW Toronto, according to the release, resulted from the growing demand to express the talents of the nation’s fashion imagers and their influence worldwide. “Caribbean designs,” the GFW release further said, “are becoming recognized in the global fashion market and 2010 marks the staging of the fourth edition of the phenomenal exposition, which still maintains its original mission of revitalizing the fashion industry.
“Fashion is a perfect medium to deliver messages to a wider audience, hence GFW in the past had campaigns for HIV/AIDS, Domestic Violence with this year’s message devoted to Breast Cancer Awareness.”
CEO of Guyana Fashion Week and designer of Mariska Designs, Sonia Noel is determined to bring the world of Caribbean designers and fashion to the international market as Guyana is a significant and more so, an influential contributor to the wider regional aesthetic – Caribbean style.
