Dear Editor,
So much has been said, and is still being said about not being cruel to animals. I am in full support of that. At the same time I would like to bring to your attention the birds that are prisoners in cages, birds that cannot free themselves and cannot say “we want to be free,” because they do not have a voice. It is my desire that a system be put in place that these helpless, voiceless creatures remain free. Some time ago I attended the funeral of a young boy, and when his body was put in the tomb someone said, “Loose the bird and let it go.” There before my eyes on the ground was a cage with a bird inside. Someone else said, “Your master is dead, you go now,” and with that he opened the door, turned the cage around several times but all the bird did was hop around inside because that was the only environment it knew. However, with a little more turning it hopped out, turned around, flapped its wings and flew. I watched as it disappeared into the vast unknown.
Editor, these creatures were made free and they must remain free.
Yours faithfully,
Yvonne Walcott
