The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) has revealed the names of five young cyclists who will represent Guyana at the Caribbean Youth Championships on August 7 and 8 in Aruba.
This was disclosed during a press briefing at the Water Chris Hotel yesterday.
The riders will be representing Guyana in three categories – Juniors, Juveniles and Females.
Neil Reece and Christopher Holder will be competing in the juniors category, Paul DeNobrega and Kurt La Rose will be the Juveniles, while Marica Dick will be participating in the females category.
The riders, who were present at a GCF hosted press briefing yesterday, along with GCF members and other officials who will be accompanying them to the championships, were encouraged to “put their best foot forward… and do Guyana proud.”
These remarks were made by GCF Vice President Brian Allen who noted that the team selected is capable of delivering podium results, since it comprises cyclists who have international experience and have performed well at international race meets.
Holder is one such rider on the team as he copped a bronze and silver medal for Guyana at the Youth Championships in 2007.
“We expect nothing but gold,” Allen said of the local Junior participants for the Youth Championships. He further stated that if the lone female competitor, Dick “puts her best foot forward, she too is capable of capturing a gold medal.”
Acting President of the GCF, Cheryl Thompson also spoke at the briefing and declared that she has confidence in the cyclists who will be representing Guyana.
The five cyclists who will be accompanied by Team Manager Theresa Pemberton and Team Coach Randolph Roberts will depart on August 6 and return on August 9.
Appreciation was also shown to the sponsors who funded the team’s trip with their contribution of approximately US$5000.
These sponsors are: Neron Ross, Diane Prince, Mulvin Prince, A. Ally and Sons, Water Chris, Furniture World, Anthony Funeral Home, Demerara Power, Lifetime Realty, Roraima Bikers Club, Becks Motor World, American Exchange Barber Shop, Raymond (Princess Street), Vision Technology, Bansen’s Trading, Curtis and Associates.
