WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, West Virginia, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago’s Stephen Ames warmed up for Sunday’s final round at the US$6 million Greenbrier Classic with an impressive three-under 67 yesterday.
The 46-year-old, who now plays under the Canadian flag, carved out seven birdies to finish the day tied for 36th at eight-under overall.
Starting on the front nine, Ames reeled off birdies on the second, fourth and sixth to make the turn at three-under and lay the foundation for a big finish.
After birdying the par-4 11th, however, he was undone by a triple bogey on the par-5 12th before stumbling again with another dropped shot on the 14th, to slump to even par.
But in show of character and resolve, Ames bounced back well with successive birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th to close out beautifully.
American Jeff Overton grabbed the clubhouse lead with a 66, and is three strokes clear of DA Points.
