The police are investigating an armed robbery during which two UK–based Guyanese men and two females were attacked and robbed by three men armed with handguns on Saturday night while travelling along the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) public road.
According to a release, investigations revealed that Guyanese Carl Ramroop, 29, and Suresh Deonanand, 38, both of London, were in a car along with Rosanna Padmore, 20, and a 13-year-old female student of Republic Park, EBD, when they were robbed in the vicinity of Garden of Eden around 11:30 on Saturday evening.
The victims’ car slowed down as it approached the area where roadwork is being undertaken on a culvert, when another vehicle overtook them and then blocked their path. Three armed men exited the motor vehicle and held up the four who were robbed of a quantity of jewellery, a wrist watch, personal documents, US$800 and 750 pounds sterling. The men then rejoined their motor vehicle and escaped.
The overseas–based men resisted their attackers during the ordeal, one of whom discharged a round which grazed the left side of Ramroop’s head while Deonanand was assaulted about his body. They were treated at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and sent away.
While one of the victims offered no comment when contacted yesterday, persons at the scene told Stabroek News that the two vehicles were heading in the direction of Timehri when the incident occurred. A security guard nearby related that he was on his way home shortly after being relieved of duty for the night when he observed “a commotion” between the occupants of the two vehicles close to the culvert which is being renovated.
He said the incident occurred within the matter of minutes while there was light traffic along the roadway at the time. The victims and several police officers from the Grove Police Station returned to the scene yesterday afternoon as investigations into the incident continue.
