(Trinidad Express) Joel Pitt was looking forward to marrying his childhood sweetheart this coming Saturday.
But instead of preparing for a wedding, his family and fiancee are planning a funeral for him.
Pitt, 25, a Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) employee, was killed early Sunday morning when a car slammed into him while he was speaking with a group of people outside the Prive nightclub at South Trunk Road, La Romaine.
Included in the group was Pitt’s elder brother, Jason, who flew in from the United States to be at his brother’s wedding. Pitt’s fiancee, Valiene Laurie, 24, told the Express that Pitt took his final breath while cradled in the arms of his brother whom he had not seen in 14 years. Laurie and Pitt had been together since they were 12 years old and got engaged about four years ago. The wedding was scheduled to take place at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Port of Spain followed by a reception at Signature Hall, Longdenville in Chaguanas. “Everything was paid for,” Laurie said.
“There are people still coming in from abroad for the wedding. But they will be attending a funeral instead.”
Laurie said she received a call around 4.20 p.m. telling her to go to the San Fernando General Hospital. By the time she arrived, Pitt was already dead.
The grieving fiancee said she was told by eyewitnesses that no one in the group saw the car approaching.
