DENNERY, St Lucia, CMC – Roston Chase’s all-round prowess was enough to spur Barbados to a comfortable 55-run win over Leeward Islands in their fourth round match in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 One-Day Trophy yesterday.
In an encounter reduced to 20 overs per side after a damp outfield delayed the start until 2:45 pm, Chase slammed a thrilling 49 to help lift Barbados to 155 all out off 19.1 overs.
He then returned to grab three for nine with his probing off-spin to send the Leewards tumbling to 104 all out off 15.4 overs at the Dennery Playing Field.
Sent in after losing the toss, Barbados had a fantastic start as captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Clint St Hill added a rousing 66 for the first wicket.
Brathwaite stroked an even fifty off 38 balls with four fours and three sixes while St Hill gave great support with 16 before he was run out in the ninth over.
The right-handed Brathwaite then drove Shane Burton to mid-off at 81 for two in the 12th over as Barbados slipped to 81 for two but Chase kept the innings together with a superb attacking knock.
Though losing Kyle Mayers (8) and Justin Greaves (3), Chase continued to plunder the Leewards bowling, striking four fours and three sixes in an innings that required just 29 balls.
He perished via the run route at 158 for eight with Barbados searching for quick runs.
In reply, the Leewards never recovered from a poor start and lost wickets steadily without gathering runs fast enough.
They lost Burton in the second over to fast bowler Justin Greaves who also removed the other opener Rakeem Cornwall to a catch by Dario Cummins at long-off in the fourth over at 32 for two.
Captain Adelvin Phillip holed out to long-off for 14 off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican in the seventh over and when Akeem Saunders was run out for 19 in the 11th over at 70 for four, it triggered a slide which saw the Leewards lose their last seven wickets for 34 runs.
Left-arm spinner Dario Cummins claimed two for six off just four balls while Greaves finished with two for 30.
Heading into today’s final round, Barbados lie second on nine points behind leaders Trinidad and Tobago who have 10 points, with Windward Islands on seven points and Jamaica on six points.
