Taffin Khan played undefeated to capture the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) organized Apex Insurance Rapid Chess Tournament which concluded over the weekend at the Keishar’s Sports Club.
Khan secured the maximum of seven points from seven games to land the title ahead of Learie Webster who finished second with six points.
Webster’s only loss was to Khan in their second round clash while veteran player Errol Tiwari took the final podium position with five points.
Dennis Dillon, Irshad Mohamad, David Khan, Omar Shariff and Frankie Farley all finished on four points.
Glenford Corlette and Ryan Singh ended on three and-a-half points; Ronald Roberts on three points; Haatram Parbat on two and-a-half points Alex Joseph and Christopher Chung ended with two points while Steven Leung ended with one and-a-half points.
In the junior category, national junior champion Cecil Cox returned with a bang to secure top honors. Cox ended with six points from five wins and two draws. Raan Motilall finished second while West Demerara’s Rajendra Jethoo surprised the competition to take the third position ahead of Saeed Ali.
The final points standing were; Cox – six points; Motilall, five and-a-half points; Rajendra Jethoo, five points; Saeed Ali, Ron Motilall, Suhai Feng and Sham Khan, four and-a-half points; Rashad Hussain, Meikel Mohabir and Jason Barnwell, four points and Faraad Baksh, three and-a-half points.
Eight other players were tied on three points apiece.
