GROS ISLET St Lucia, CMC – Orthodox left arm spinner Coi Thompson undermined Guyana with a five-wicket haul to help Jamaica secure a comfortable seven-wicket win over Guyana in the penultimate round of matches in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 One-Day Trophy here yesterday.
Thompson bagged five for 14 off six overs as the Guyanese were toppled for a paltry 105 off 30.2 overs after being sent in at the Gros Islet Playing Field, in a game reduced to 45 overs due to overnight and early morning rain. Jamaica then cruised to 108 for three off 27.2 overs to wrap up an easy win and move to six points in the standings, behind leaders Trinidad and Tobago on 10, Barbados on nine and Windward Islands on seven.
Harrinarine Chattergoon, the younger brother of senior player Sewnarine Chattergoon, top-scored with 26 and was involved in a 30-run, second round partnership with opener Quincy Richardson (19), the largest stand of the innings.
They were two of just four batsmen to reach double figures along with Herell Greene, (17) and captain Dexter Solomon (11).
Leg-spinner Donovon Nelson picked up two wickets for nine runs off 6.2 overs and opening bowler Orane Williams bagged two for 36 from six overs.
Jamaica had a sound start with Peat Salmon (38) and John Campbell (21) posting 27 for the first wicket, before Salmon and Ramon Senior (14) combined to add another 44 for the second wicket.
The Jamaicans lost both players with the score on 77 but captain Paul Palmer (15) and Williams (12) shared an unbroken 31 to lead their side home.
Jamaica face Barbados in their final round clash at the Dennery Playing Field today.
