A 47-year-old man yesterday morning escaped injury after the fumes within a manhole where he was working made him unconscious.
According to reports, 47-year old Paul Bacchus was at the time working along with several persons for the Guyana Water Inc, in the vicinity of Camp and Hadfield streets, when the incident occurred. A nearby resident told Stabroek News that sometime after 10 am yesterday, persons converged on the scene as word spread of the situation.
The man spent close to 20 minutes in the manhole, which was being cleaned, before he was eventually pulled out by his colleagues.
The resident could not say if Bacchus was wearing protective equipment at the time and attempts by this newspaper to obtain a comment from GWI PRO Timothy Austin yesterday were unsuccessful.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention where he was examined by medical staff.
The man was subsequently discharged from the medical institution, hospital sources related yesterday.
