Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon said yesterday that government will attempt to alleviate the garbage crisis in the city through its own initiative which is being spearheaded by the ministries of Local Government and Public Works and Communications.
Some equipment has been donated to the administration according to Luncheon and he noted that government has the support of the private sector and other donors. He said that officials at the two lead ministries have been asked to spearhead an immediate crash course exercise to collect garbage in the city.
“In the face of the uncollected garbage the garden city is fast becoming the garbage city”, Luncheon said yesterday. He said too that households which are among the most severely affected sectors have not been aggressively dealt with as the commercial and business sectors.
The garbage disposal crisis in the city has been dragging out since June 21 when garbage collectors pulled their services because the city council is in arrears of $75m.
Several private initiatives are ongoing, but the garbage heaps continues to pile up across the city.
