A 20-year-old woman, who was allegedly found with a quantity of cannabis concealed in two deodorant bottles at the Camp Street Prison, was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $60,000 when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Kelly Ann Barker of “B” Field Sophia pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics when Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton read it to her.
She denied that on August 3 at the Camp Street Prison she had thirteen and a half grammes of cannabis in her possession.
Her lawyer Lawrence Harris applied for reasonable bail for her on the grounds that she was not aware that the deodorant bottles were filled with cannabis.
He said that before his client went to the prison to visit her cousin she met a man at the bus park who gave her a bag of deodorants.
He noted that only one bottle had cannabis.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor Shellon Daniels made no objections to the bail application but stated that the prison officers found two ‘Old Spice’ deodorants in a bag that Barker had in her possession while at the prison.
He said that the prison officers did a routine check on Barker and discovered the cannabis stashed in the two bottles. She was then told of the offence, arrested and later charged. The magistrate then ordered that Barker return to court on November 29 when a Preliminary Inquiry into the matter is scheduled to commence.
